Hult MBA student finds life-changing job †6 months before graduation

This is exactly what I did when I made my decision to pursue an MBA at Hult in San Francisco. Last February, I received an acceptance letter from Hult  but could not enroll right away. There were many factors to consider, and big life changes to make. It was a major financial commitment; it required giving up on my green card (which was in process); and quitting a well-paid senior executive position. More importantly, it meant that my wife would have to remain in India for at least for few a months. But I knew that if I did not make the big leap now (at the age of 32 and with no kids yet), I would never go after an MBA again. I realized that Hult  offered an opportunity I could not miss. From the first moment I had heard about the school, it attracted me like a magnet. The school is young at heart and is redefining the concept of delivering business education. I wanted to be a part of that. So last summer, I took a leap of faith and enrolled at Hult. Little did I know that I wasn’t just beginning an MBA program, I was actually getting plugged into a new world where experiments are fun, not scary, and there’s always the drive to try new things. The school’s faculty and staff are full of energy and passion, just like the students, and don’t just want to produce the best MBAs—but the best human leaders. I view Hult as a powerhouse of humble, talented people from across the world, with dreams to accomplish great things, not just for themselves, but to make the world a better place. It’s now been six months since I started my MBA, and my job search is already over. I have been offered the role of Technical Program Manager at Amazons  headquarters in Seattle, and start in September. I am the first MBA candidate across all campuses to land a job, and one with a six-figure salary. My job offer came six months in advance of completing my program, which is something I had not expected, but also a very pleasant surprise. You might now be thinking, how did this happen? We also got a message loud and clear: start your job hunt early. We were urged to submit our rà ©sumà ©s in a recommended format, and to refine our LinkedIn profiles right away, so we could get feedback from our career advisors. But the real magic happened when I started meeting with my designated advisor, Laura Maish, in person. I remember two invaluable mantras she gave me: Make sure your rà ©sumà ©Ã‚  and LinkedIn profile reflect your value proposition effectively and precisely. It’s time to network. Right about now you may be thinking: â€Å"None of that is new. I’ve heard this before. Networking is an overused term.† This is why the role of a Career Services advisor is so critical. Laura didn’t just give me guidance, she diligently worked with me to build a solid LinkedIn profile that reflected who I am, and the skills I uniquely bring to the table. She also coached me to become an effective networker. I consider myself to be good at people skills, but I had always been bad at networking because I thought it required me to look out for myself and no one else. It made me feel very uncomfortable. But Laura provided advice that changed my perspective and made me feel more confident. She told me to let go of the mindset that I’m only there to seek a job opportunity. Most importantly, she told me to step inside of my fellow networkers’ shoes, because while my objective was to find a job, someone else may be hoping to make connections with talented, skilled people.  My interactions with Career  Services the last few months have been an intense process of self-discovery,  like polishing a stone into a diamond. Meeting with him led to connecting on LinkedIn, and that gave me exposure to Amazons recruiter network, because one of them found me there and the rest is history. Moving Ahead Despites Failure Essay My first semester of my senior year is the first time in my life I have experienced a high degree of failure. By no means am I making excuses for my shortcomings, rather this essay is an examination of a point in my life in which I did not produce the results I set out to achieve. My failure to recognize my own physical, mental, and emotional limits leaves me in the gutters of my psyche. The belief that I am invincible is a lie, and my failure to understand that I too have a breaking point must be recognized so I may keep moving forward. There are 24 hours in one day, and there is still enough time for me to do anything I NEED to do. As an elite ice hockey player in Southern California and diligent student my schedule is loaded from 5 A. M. to 1 A. M. every day. Every morning, I wake up at 5 A. M. , go to school for zero period and then leave after sixth to get home around 5P. M. From then until 6 P. M. I must complete all my homework, eat some dinner, and study for exams before I leave for hockey practice 45 minutes away. Hockey practice consists of flexibility training, heavy lifting, and a two hour ice slot lasting from 7P. M to 12A. M. It is not until 12:30 that my day is over and I may go to sleep. Repeat Monday through Friday. Welcome to my never ending hell, the hell I created for myself because of my inability to recognize my limit. On top of my daily schedule, my monthly schedule includes at one, 5 day trip out of state to participate in a hockey tournament. Each trip I go on, I miss 3 to 4 school days. From August to December that is 20 days of school (out of 90 in the semester) missed just from hockey. How did I believe that I could keep up with such a rigorous schedule and compete at the highest ice hockey level in the nation? People ask me: Do you sleep, do you do homework, do you eat, do you ever hang out with friends? If I were to stay up and finish all my homework, when would I sleep? I get less than 20 hours of sleep during the week, should I cut out more sleep. Well I tried that, and both weeks I tested that hypothesis, I got sick. I firmly believe that my Calculus and Psychology grades would have been much higher if I had taken those classes later in the day when I am more alert. What if I just quit hockey? Cannot do that either, my parents wont let me and we billet a teammate from the Czech Republic so he wouldnt have anywhere to go. There is no escape from this vicious cycle. All my life, I have faced adversity. I have been knocked to the ground but I have always managed to find my way back on my feet. This case of adversity wasnt like a punch, it was like being hit by a train. I am truly scared for the first time in my life. Did I do enough? I can honestly say that with my schedule and amount of sleep I had, I did everything that was physically possible to accomplish my goals. I have learned that the best way to combat this instance of failure is to recognize that I cant do it all, I am human. I need to be respect my limits and work hard in everything I do. I cant stop! I will never quit! I hope that I am given an opportunity at University of Colorado-Boulder to showcase my strengths in math and science so that I may apply what I have recently learned about myself at the institute.
